The egg shaker is the workhorse of early years music. It fits a small hand, it weighs almost nothing, it makes a pleasant sound however it is held, and it is quiet enough that thirty of them at once do not hurt anyone's ears.

Plastic eggs are the standard. NINO singles come in eight colours, which is useful for grouping a class or assigning by colour. GMP supplies pairs and packs of forty. NINO supplies a dozen, a four-pack and an eighty-piece assortment.

Wooden egg shakers give a drier, slightly louder sound with more edge to it, and the GMP model is stocked as a single.

Handle egg maracas are the same head on a stick. The handle changes how the instrument plays, since the beads land together on the beat rather than rustling continuously, and it also gives a child something easier to grip. GMP and NINO both make them, and NINO supplies a set of forty-eight.
