Instruments chosen for how they feel as much as how they sound: seed shakers, rainsticks and kalimbas, mostly from Groove Masters Percussion.
Sensory work asks something different of an instrument. It has to be safe to hold and mouth, it has to reward slow movement rather than force, and it has to produce a sound that settles a room rather than exciting it. Very little standard classroom percussion does all three.
Pangi seed shakers are dried pods bound to a handle. The surface is irregular and pleasant to handle, and the sound is a soft rustle rather than a rattle, closer to leaves than to a percussion instrument. A wearable version straps to the ankle or wrist, so the sound comes from moving rather than from gripping, which matters for anyone who cannot hold an instrument.
Rainsticks respond directly to how slowly they are tipped. Faster gives more sound, slower gives less, and that immediate cause and effect is often the point of the activity rather than the music. Bamboo models from MEINL and robust PVC models from GMP are stocked.
Kalimbas are tuned so every note fits, which means a person exploring with their thumbs cannot produce a wrong sound. The wooden bodies are warm to hold, and several carry carved surfaces and a palm rest.
Also here: the GMP mahogany bird shaker, which is shaped to sit in a closed hand.
Well suited to sensory rooms, special education and adaptive classrooms, early childhood programs, seniors and care settings, and quiet corners at home.
