A bass recorder is played with a bocal, the curved metal crook that carries the breath from the player's mouth down to the instrument, because the body is too long to reach the mouth directly. The lowest notes are covered by a key rather than a finger.

AULOS offers a traditional-style body and a more compact modern shape. The EMUS model is a three-piece design. Because a bass takes more air than the other sizes and speaks more slowly, it suits a confident player rather than a beginner.
