German or English/Baroque fingering: which should I choose?
With German fingering, you lift each finger in turn as you play up the scale. With English/Baroque fingering, low F is played with the middle finger of the right hand up and all other fingers down. Both are equally popular, and the choice usually depends on the teacher.
How can I tell which fingering a recorder has?
Look at the 4th and 5th holes from the top. On a German recorder the 4th hole is larger than the 5th. On an English/Baroque recorder the 5th hole is larger than the 4th.
Which soprano recorder is best for a class set?
The 3-piece E302 (German) and E303 (English/Baroque) are among our most popular recorders. Each comes with a removable thumb rest, cloth bag, cleaning rod and fingering chart.
How do I care for an AULOS recorder?
AULOS recorders are made from easy-care ABS plastic. Use the included cleaning rod after playing, and a little joint grease (E253) if the joints get stiff.
Do you sell replacement thumb rests and bags?
Yes. Soprano thumb rests come in packs of 10 (ivory TS-3I or brown TS-3D) and alto thumb rests in packs of 5 (TA-3D). We also carry a tenor thumb rest and bags for soprano, alto and tenor recorders.
What are adaptive recorders?
The E204AF soprano and E309AF alto have small body sections that turn to fit each finger and are then glued in place. They are designed for players with finger disabilities.
Which tenor or bass recorder should I choose?
The E211A tenor is lighter and smaller than the E511, which suits smaller hands. For bass, the E521 is a direct-blow knick style that is easy to play, and the E533B is the traditional style.
AULOS recorders, made in Japan, in every size from sopranino to bass.
AULOS is the recorder most Canadian school programs are built around, and the reason is consistency. The instruments are moulded from ABS resin to close tolerances, so one soprano from a class set plays in tune with the next, which is the thing that actually determines whether thirty students sound like an ensemble.
Both fingering systems are stocked. German fingering simplifies the note F so a beginner reaches a first scale sooner. Baroque, also called English, asks for a cross-fingering on F and stays consistent from there upward, and it is what most method books and ensemble parts are written for. Match whatever your school already owns.
Sizes run sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor and bass. One-piece sopranos have nothing to misalign in a class set. Two and three-piece models let the foot joint rotate for a smaller hand and the head pull out to tune to a group. Tenors are available with and without keys, and the bass models come with a bocal.
The Haka series takes its shape from a historical instrument and comes in plain and wood-grain finishes.
