One strike produces a clear tone that sustains for several seconds and carries across a busy room without anyone raising their voice. That is what they are mainly used for: signalling a transition, calling a class back together, or opening and closing a session. Teachers often ask students to raise a hand when they can no longer hear it, which turns the signal into a listening exercise.

GMP chimes come in two sizes and NINO in three, with a three-tone NINO model that gives three pitches on one handle. They are also used in sound healing, mindfulness and therapy settings for the same reason.
