A buffalo drum is a large frame drum with a single head and a rope or wood handle across the back, held in one hand and struck with a soft beater in the other. The tone is low, breathy and slow to decay, and it carries a room without being loud. It is a fixture of drum circles, wellness sessions and multicultural programs for exactly that reason.

REMO buffalo drums come in four sizes, with a sixteen inch bass model that sits lower again. GMP buffalo frame drums use either a napa or a fibreskin head, and the eighteen inch bodhrán is a related instrument played with a double-ended beater.

A gathering drum is different in use rather than in kind. It is a wide, low drum that stands on the floor with several players around it at once, so a group plays one instrument together instead of one each. REMO gathering drums come in kids heights in eighteen, twenty-one and twenty-two inch widths, including Not-So-Loud versions for small rooms, and a rainbow finish.
