A folder does two jobs in an ensemble. It holds the music flat and in order so nothing slides off a stand mid-performance, and it makes the group look like a group when it is held up in front of an audience.
Custom imprinting is the reason most schools order these rather than buying plain ones. A school name, a program name, an ensemble name or a logo is printed on the cover, and student names can be added so folders come back to the right person.
The choir ring binder version has two expanding pockets, which holds loose parts, pencils and a folded programme alongside the bound music.
Ordering is worth doing early in a season rather than close to a concert, since imprinting adds production time to a plain folder.
