Mallets for drums and tuned percussion, from SUZUKI, EMUS, REMO and Groove Masters Percussion.
The head decides the sound. A hard wooden head gives a bright attack you hear as part of the note, which suits wood blocks and glockenspiels. Felt is soft and round, which is why timpani mallets are felt: a hard head on a timpano produces a slap rather than a pitch. Rubber and yarn sit between the two.
Weight is the other half of it. A contra-bass mallet is heavy because a large bar needs mass behind it to speak at all, and a small drum mallet is light because anything heavier just chokes the head.
Timpani mallets come from SUZUKI, EMUS in soft felt, and GMP in a soft grade. GMP marimba mallets are stocked in a choice of softness. Contra-bass mallets come from SUZUKI, and the SUZUKI temple block mallet and felt-covered soft rubber mallet cover two more specific jobs.
REMO supplies wooden mallets in two sizes, a ten inch mallet, a small baby drum mallet and the lollipop mallet. EMUS supplies maple wood and felt pairs.
Also here: GMP earth sticks as a single and a seven-prong pair, a drumstick and mallet hybrid, and plush surdo bass drum mallets in two sizes.
