A wood djembe is turned from a single piece of hardwood, most of these in mahogany, then carved and finished by hand. That is the reason two drums of the same model do not look identical, and it is also the reason a wood shell sounds warmer and more complex than a moulded one. The bass sits deeper and the open tone has more overtone in it.

The GMP Pro Series comes in a plain natural finish and in several carved and two-tone designs, including the Horn of Strength, an ocean scene and an elephant motif. Mini wood djembes in four sizes suit younger students and smaller hands.

Rope tuning is part of how these drums work. The vertical cords are pulled down in a pattern to tighten the head, so pitch is adjustable but it takes a few minutes and a little practice rather than a turn of a key.

Natural skin responds to the room. In a damp hall the head goes slack and the tone drops, and in dry winter heat it tightens and brightens. Players who want a drum that ignores the weather usually go to a composite shell with a synthetic head instead.
