Ocean drums from REMO, NINO and Groove Masters Percussion.

An ocean drum is a shallow double-headed frame drum with small steel beads sealed inside. Tilted slowly, the beads roll across the inside of the head and produce a remarkably convincing wave sound. Tilted faster the wave breaks, and struck like a hand drum it gives a normal drum note with the beads rattling over the top.

It is one of the few instruments where the sound depends entirely on control rather than force, which makes it useful for teaching listening and dynamics. A student who wants a gentle wave has to move slowly, and that is a lesson that lands faster with an ocean drum than with an instruction.

The clear-headed models let players watch the beads move, which holds attention in early years and sensory settings. Ocean drums are also a fixture of sound baths, relaxation sessions and care work for the same reason.
